Nearest place for sea fishing trips.

In the estuary of the river Almyros the fishermen and boat owners tie up their craft. You can read the advertisements posted at many of the boats to get the phone numbers of the owners whether its for a fishing trip or a pleasure trip. If there are no notices posted then a short walk to the little cafe opposite the end of the river bridge where a lovely German couple can tell you much about the boats. Stay awhile and sample the good coffee and biscuits while you chat.

Loutro Ferry

Stop off between Chora Sfaxion and Samaria Gorge.

Stop off between Chora Sfaxion and Samaria Gorge.

This is a most enjoyable ride along the south coast. There a a couple of good reasons to travel this ferry. You would either be returning to the coaches at Chora Sfaxion for the journey back to the villa or you would be taking the ferry to that beautiful jewel of the south coast, Loutro.
Many people just take the ferry to view the neglected beaches along the south coast, then to get off at Agia Roumeli and walk to the end of the Samaria Gorge, just to see what it looks like.
The ferry goes from Chora Sfaxion twice a day but check for local timings.

Gramvousa

One of the most picturesque areas of the Mediterranean is the Balos beach at the end of the Gramvousa peninsular. Fabulous pink, white and yellow sand and warm shallow sea. One of the most photographed places in the Med. It is possible to get within a couple of kilometres by car but it is quite a torturous drive. The best way is by sea. The Gramvousa ferry departs from the port at Kissamos-Kastelli, three times a day and stops off at Gramvousa for the walk up the steep steps to the Venetian fort. The ferry will then take you to the stunning beach at Balos. When you reach Balos you need to alight from the ferry via the lighter craft as seen in the photo. It's a bit tricky but the seamen will assist. It is all worth it !
