Georgioupoli

Part of the 9 klm of beach stretching from Georgioupoli toward Rethymno.

Georgioupoli offers everything to the holidaymaker. Stunning beaches, many cafes, restaurants and traditional tavernas to suit anyone's taste. The sea is cooled from the underground cold water streams and the river Almyros which is a great feature of the resort. Sit awhile on the estuary rocks looking at the fishermen mending their nets or the fish below and you may see a loggerhead turtle or even a kingfisher. All the beaches are lined with eating establishments so you won't go hungry and the beaches are well served by numerous facilities.
Don't forget to visit the little fishermens' church out in the bay, a popular backdrop for wedding photos.
There are several tourist shops in the village which also enjoys a recently refurbished village square with its ring of bars and tavernas where there can often be heard local Cretan or even modern rock music.
Georgioupoli is on the north coast just off the main highway about halfway between Chania and Rethymno.

kera

Quiet cove between Kalyves and Almyrida.

Quiet cove between Kalyves and Almyrida.

Kera lies on the coast road midway between the resort of Almyrida and Kalyves. Swimming is good here and can be popular with young Greeks who know of its existence and like to swim to the Smooth Rock and climb to the top for diving off. There are very limited facilities with a sometime cantina during high season. There is an interesting byzantine church at the back of the beach. Kera was once a bustling city state of 50,000 people but earthquakes and wars took its toll. You can drive to a car back just at the back of the beach. It can be a popular beach for naturists.

Octopus Bay

Commonly known as Octopus Bay. A great place for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Commonly known as Octopus Bay. A great place for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Facing eastward toward Almyros Bay is the tiny bay of Ombriagialos. Very popular with Greeks especially at the weekends. Swimming is fabulous in the crystal clear water but entry and exit of the sea can be quite difficult. Not a place to venture to if the wind is blowing as the waves make it impossible to get out of the water onto the concrete deck. There are minimal facilies but there is quite a good cantina/taverna by the sea. There is a small turn off to the north of Paleloni opposite a house with a very large aerial dish on the roof. Follow the road down to the sea.

kalives

A popular village or small town on the north coast. This is the mouth of the river Koiliaris at Kyan Akti beach.

A popular village or small town on the north coast. This is the mouth of the river Koiliaris at Kyan Akti beach.

Kalyves has a very nice town beach with good sand and safe swimming. Facilities are good and the tavernas have a very good reputation among the locals. This beach however is situated to the west of the town and tends to have more space as it is " out of town ". Facilities are now very good with an excellent taverna / restaurant that also has an open swimming pool. The sand here is very good and swimming great but it can be difficult for the elderly or infirm getting in and out of the water due to a shelving beach. Kalyves is about 30 mins to the east of Chania.

Almyrida

The little jewel of the Apokoronas.

The little jewel of the Apokoronas.

Once a tiny fishing village of few inhabitants, Almyrida has become a bustling little resort for the Apokoronas. The British and Scandinavian expats loom over the resort with their holiday villas and the beach is very popular with the Scandinavians and Russians who visit every year. The same visitors are testament to how good the facilities and restaurants, that fringe the beach road, are. The town beach is beautiful sand and there is a small Greek island style harbour. To the east of the village is another small sandy cove and a pebble beach alongside that offers good snorkelling. Almyrida lies on Crete's north west coast about 35 mins drive from Chania.

Koutalas Cove

Great little bay for swimming and snorkelling north of Kokkino Chorio.

Great little bay for swimming and snorkelling north of Kokkino Chorio.

One of the most asked questions in the area is " Where is the little beach in Kokkino Chorio ? " It's a little gem for swimming and snorkelling, a large variety of fish feed in the little bay. It is difficult to find and many people get lost in Kokkino Chorio. You have to travel along the road to the lighthouse on Cape Drapano. After you go over a very small bridge where the tarmac is falling away, look out for a turning to the left. You can drive right down to the beach, but beware, at weekends it can get quite busy.
